We read.

Every book answers one question by reading what hundreds of people already wrote about it. Here is how that is done, and what it cannot do.

Where the posts come from

Public posts and comments, written by the person it happened to, without anyone asking them to. Most were written to help a stranger who had asked a question. We take them from the places that conversation already happens, forums and Reddit and Hacker News, and we name the community, never the person.

Same questions, every post

Routes, prices, timelines, attempts. Every post is read once and put against the same short list of plain questions, so the answers can sit side by side.

What we can’t know

Only people who chose to write are in the pile, in English, usually after it worked. The quiet and the failed are missing, and reading more of it does not fix that. This limit is printed in every book, in the same size type as the findings.

Every book says when its posts were read and how many were set aside for saying too little to use.

The quote rule

Short exact quotes. Community named, person never. If you wrote something we quoted and would rather not be in there, write to us. It comes out of the next printing, no explanation needed.
