The jacket of What Actually Worked

Book 01

845 people said how they really got their first client.

Each of them wrote it down in public, in one of 49 communities, most of them answering a stranger who had asked. The book reads all of it at once. What comes out is not the list you have been given.

The findings

3 kinds of work

had enough people saying both what they sold and how the client arrived. The answer is not the same for each, which is what most readers came here to find out. Too few said it in marketing and video to report anything there.

41%

of everyone here said what they actually DID, not just where they were standing. That is 344 of them, and it is the question most people never got round to answering.

36 tries

before the first client said yes, taking the middle of the 32 people who kept track. The range runs from 1 to 1200.

18%

of the people who said where their client came from were passed the work by somebody they already knew. 68 of them.

48%

of the same people found the client on a bidding site, Upwork and Fiverr together. 179 of them, and the largest group of any.

9%

wrote to somebody who had not asked. 32 people.

In their own words

“I actually won my first contract last night on Upwork - $35 to fix an email problem”
r/EntrepreneurRideAlong
“My first client was my local coffee shop. I got my coffee from there all the time”
r/webflow
“Then I made 1200+ cold calls between 6-8am before work, for an hour on my lunch breaks, evenings, and weekends before I landed my first customer”
r/Entrepreneur

Quoted exactly. Community named, person never.

Not a method.

No method, no framework, no seven steps. It will not tell you what to do on Tuesday. It says what people wrote happened, which is not always what happened, and the chapter on where the evidence stops being useful is printed in the same size type as everything else.
